MIDWEST DOOR AND HARDWARE NOW SUPPLIES SHELTER; A NEW LOCKDOWN SYSTEM FOR SCHOOLS.

When locking down a school or building, the less panic the better – especially in the case of an active intruder.

Increased classroom safety is an important issue for Midwest Door & Hardware. We are excited to introduce a new product that could significantly improve the safety of schools and businesses around the state and country.

As a select partner with Stanley Security Solutions, we’ve recently launched a new state-of-the-art SHELTERlockdown system that works at the touch of a button to minimize the harm done in emergency situations.

SHELTER WAS DEVELOPED BY ENGINEERS WITH EXPERIENCE IN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATIONS

After the Sandy Hook tragedy, an advisory committee looked behind the scenes and discovered that an active intruder never breached a locked classroom door.

What’s even more tragic is that most active shooter incidents end in under five minutes- usually before police can arrive. Thus, the ability to quickly gather behind a locked door is essential to saving lives.

However, manually locking a door requires an individual to get closer to a potential danger point outside of the safety of the closed door. Additionally, calling a resource officer to lock the doors can take precious time in those critical five minutes.

These inefficiencies in safety inspired Stanley to engineer a system that works quickly and easily for increased security.

SHELTER WORKS AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON

SHELTER operates with a system of gateways and repeaters that lock the doors using a small key fob that transmits information through local wifi. The system is configurable — each key fob can be made to fit each employee’s specific lockdown responsibility from covering the lockdown of one door to several doors, or the entire building.

The system can be incorporated into existing access control to add an additional layer of security. Or, it can be installed as a stand-alone system. In comparison to access control, SHELTER is about a third of price. The system is modular, allowing incremental installation through different areas of the building or campus.

SHELTER was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. You can read the article Using Technology to Protect From Mass Shootings.
